■”The Splash Moon” is selected as a finalist for NQ Ceramic Awards 2020

My work “The Splash Moon” is selected as one of the finalists for the Biennal NQ Ceramic Awards 2020.

The Splash Moon (30 x 33 x 40 cm height), by Keiko Matsui
[Photography: Greg Piper Image Solution]

I am thrilled to announce that The Splash Moon was selected as one of the finalists for the Biennal NQ Ceramic Awards 2020.It is not easy to travel anywhere now due to the COVID19 pandemic, however, I appreciate if you could visit the exhibition when you are around. There are so many beautiful and technically challenging artworks in this prestegious awards.

The Moon represents powerful feminine energy.

It signifies wisdom, intuition, birth, death, and a spiritual connection. I am allured by the moon for the reason that it is an eternally beautiful object.

The Splash Moon is a sculptural vessel combining strong Japanese aesthetics: WABI (subdued, austere beauty) SABI (rustic patina), and YOU-NO-BI (Beauty in utilitarian objects).

It endeavours to express the light (splashes of gold kintsugi pigment) and the darkness (dark bronze glaze running) of the moon while incorporating the shape of a female’s pudendum as a base.

The silver part on the base is not the shadow of the moon above, yet it is enticing the viewer to ponder.

You may feel like standing in the universe after contemplating this artwork by walking in a full circle.

Congratulations to the winners and all the finalists!

If anyone would like to purchase this one-off piece, please contact the gallery staff directly.

■Peacocks are coming to my studio!

I hope everyone is handling new iso-life style well by now. My routine has not changed much (except I have to do homeschooling for my child – which takes lots of my ‘day’time) as I have an access to my studio at Montsalvat in Eltham VIC. One of their famous creature is peacocks. I had 3 female peacocks wanted to come inside of my studio. I wonder what they are interested…although there aren’t any food I keep in my studuo?

■”PORCELAIN” Exhibition at Beaver Galleries in Canberra

My second group exhibition in 2020 will be at Beaver Galleries in Canberra ACT from 28th May until 14th June 2020.

I will be exhibiting my new porcelain “Up_in_the_ch+air” sculptural vases. If you would like to purchase my artwork,  see Online Catalogue and contact to Susie & Martin at Beaver Galleries.

Up_in_the_ch+air is one of my sculpture series I have been working for a while. I first started to make this series when I was at the National Art School period back in 2006. I was feeling very unstable and not knowing where to practice my art as I could not find my studio after graduation. At the same time, I had to move house and looking for a place to settle. I have been back and forth from Japan and Australia many years and searching for the place for my soul then.
I stopped making Up_in_the_ch+air series when I was living in the Central Coast NSW as I was busy raising my newborn while setting up my own studio in my backyard. After 20 years of living in Sydney & the coast, I recently moved house and studio from the Central Coast to Melbourne in December 2019. It was definitely one of the stressful events in my life as we drove back and forth interstate during the great bushfires.
When I finally settled at beautiful and historical studio at Montsalvat in Melbourne in the beginning of 2020, the first artwork I started making was Up_in_the_ch+air. I must admit that I felt uncertain and unstable as I just landed new house and new studio, however, I felt very happy at the same time. It was excitement for the unknown. All my previous house/vase is made from coarse stoneware, however I used Australian whitest porcelain for my new work and applied cobalt glaze.
Up_in_the_ch+air is sculptural house and functional vase. In Japanese culture where I was born and raised, we place a single flower or tree branch in a small vase and appreciate nature in handcrafted ceramics. Although I have been living overseas more than half of my life, Japanese philosophy and aesthetic has strongly stayed within me.
At the same time, studying ceramics in Australia gave me vast and innovative approaches to my practice. Many people say that my work is not 100% Japanese yet a bit of Australian in a whimsical way. I may get those comments from the viewers, because most probably I won’t stick to the tradition of ceramics. I sometime combine with textile, thread, wood, wire, and Kintsugi techniques (the art of Japanese mending for the broken ceramics) into my ceramics.
A chair somehow resembles an individual person to me as it has character and presence. You will find your place or sense of belonging when a chair is placed in an empty room. It also implies home, or gathering as there are always chairs when people get together.
In this uncertainty, my artwork may resonate to many people yet it may give them joy and happiness. Isn’t it amazing having an observatory chair on top of your house? Isn’t it fun putting chairs on top of the roof and drinking a glass of wine together while looking up the moon? Isn’t it heavenly when you always have a place to contemplate under the stars? I believe that dreamy conversation will begin though the artwork.
I am determined to create artwork that touches one’s heart even I feel like standing with one leg like my ceramic chair now.
May 2020, Keiko Matsui

DESTRUCTION, BEAUTY & HOPE @ Long Gallery, Montsalvat.
VIC bushfire fundraising exhibition2
It has been heartbreaking to watch as the devastating bushfire crisis continues, therefore Montsalvat has decided to offer support in the form of a special fundraising exhibition entitled ’Destruction, Beauty & Hope’ to try and raise much needed funds for the appeal.

Montsalvat have invited artists to donate artworks for the exhibition with 100% of the sale of these artworks being donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Montsalvat will also be supporting the exhibition with a special opening in the Long Gallery on 1st February (2-4pm). All of which will go directly to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and 100% of these donated funds will go directly to communities in need.

The exhibition will feature over 30 works from local and prominent artists such as visual artists Lewis Miller and Karen Hopkins, internationally renowned ceramicist Kevin White and award-winning designer jeweler Jeanette Dyke. As well as many of Montsalvat’s studio artists and local artists.

I have donated my kintsugi vase for this fundraising exhibition as a part of Montsalvat’s artists as well as newly arrived resident in VIC. Please pop in the Long Gallery!

■Moving my studio from NSW to VIC

Keiko Matsui Studio MontsalvatI never thought that I would move to Melbourne although I always loved Melbourne, one of the most livable cities in the world.

After many sleepless nights and tears from sorting and packing my cluttered studio in Umina Beach NSW, I managed to move my studio to Montsalvat in Eltham VIC, which is approximately 35 min drive from CBD in Melbourne.

Montsalvat is the an oldest artist colony in Australia, established by Justus Jörgensen in 1934. It is home to over a dozen buildings, houses and halls set amongst richly established gardens on 48,562 m2 (12 acres) of land.

My studio is located right behind the Barn Gallery, opposite the fountain of bronze baby. I am extremely pleased that I became part of this creative artists community and very excited to continue my art practice from 2020.

I will be opening my studio to the public once I have settled. If you need to visit me, please contact me to info@keikomatsui.com.au

Keiko_Matsui_invite_MaySpace_2019

A new body of work will be exhibited at MAY▲SPACE in Waterloo from 16th October until 3rd November 2019.  The exhibition “Concave” is my ongoing pursuit of playing with functionality within sculptural objects. In this new work, I have tried to incorporate concave shape into the functional objects.

I will be at the opening drinks on 19th October. I appreciate to Mr. Jason Khoh (Sip Of Sake) and Ms. Setsuko Yanagisawa (Yuga Floral Design) for supporting my exhibition to be very special.

■Scar Vessels @ SLOT

SLOT-1st Image-BLOGI am exhibiting my scar vessels and chair sculptures at SLOT window gallery in Alexandria in Sydney now.  Thank you for offering me the space, Tony Twigg the gallery owner and supporting and curating artist – Anie Nheu. I would like to share Anie’s words here.

Keiko Matsui’s installation of Scar Vessels series consists mostly of the porcelain pieces made in 2014 with the more recent chair series.  These pieces are minimal in form.  The variations that create their individuality are mostly in the way the porcelain sheets are folded and joined.

They enclose the space they inhabit and turned to vessels to contain.  How these porcelain sheets meet dictate the forms they take.  Inspired by the art of Kintsugi, the junctures are left with their ‘mending’ traces.  Having them as an integral part of the identity of these forms, their appearance suggests bodies with healed scars.

The configuration of the familiar shapes found in the homes of the everyday conjures up intimate domestic setting. The use of scale in the ceramic chair with the ‘real’ chair provides a poetic narrative on the relationships amongst the assembled pieces.

This reminds me of Robert Therrien’s use of unusual scale in his re-creation of everyday objects as sculptures to strip the visual cue of their assigned functions. They are instead used as personal symbols to regenerate an emotional space of a childhood memory.  This is echoed in Keiko’s installation.

In this installation beauty is sought in the making, mending and in the arrangement. The creation of beauty in this space is controlled.  It is driven by the process of working with the intrinsic nature of the materials and an ‘innate knowing’ that has passed down through the generation.
